Post–Surgical Tooth Extraction Care Instructions
To promote proper healing and prevent complications after a surgical tooth extraction, please follow these instructions carefully:
Bite on the gauze for 30–45 minutes
This helps control bleeding and allows a blood clot to form. Replace the gauze if necessary.
Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours
This helps protect the blood clot and prevents delayed healing or dry socket.
Do not smoke or vape
Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of infection and dry socket.
Avoid physical exertion
Refrain from heavy exercise or strenuous activity for at least 48 hours after the procedure.
Apply cold compresses
Place an ice pack on the outside of the cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
Take prescribed medications as directed
Including pain relievers and antibiotics, and complete the full course if prescribed.
Eat soft foods only
Choose soft, cool foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, or soup. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods.
Do not touch the surgical area
Avoid touching the extraction site with your fingers or tongue to prevent infection.
Watch for warning signs
Contact the clinic immediately if you experience severe pain, increasing swelling, persistent bleeding, bad odor, or fever.
Attend your follow-up appointment
Follow-up visits are important to ensure proper healing and remove sutures if needed
